This page documents the process for assigning new URNs and OIDs
Overview
- The process around URNs and OIDs is centered on the Internet2 website, not the wiki.
- Key guidelines are found here:https://www.internet2.edu/products-services/trust-identity/mace-registries/#service-registries
URN Process
- Requesting an URN
- The MACE URN request form is found here: https://www.internet2.edu/products-services/trust-identity/mace-registries/urnmace-request-form/
- The form is to be copied and sent be email to mace-submit@internet2.edu
- The recipients are Keith Hazelton, Jim Jokl, Emily Eisbruch and Dean Woodbeck.
- Processing the URN Request
- Upon receipt of an email requesting an URN, Keith and Jim do some checking to be sure the institution is actually and R&E Institution? and other checking???
- Assuming Keith and Jim approve the request, they reply to the requestor, with a copy to mace-submit@internet2.edu informing that the request has been approved.
- Emily then adds the URN to the bottom of the table on this web page https://www.internet2.edu/products-services/trust-identity/mace-registries/urnmace-namespace/
- This is done using the source code editing feature in Django content manager. Not clear how to add a table row without editing the source code.
- Emily emails the submitter, copying mace-submit@internet2.edu informing the submitter that their URN is on the website.
- See sample emails in the thread below

OID Process
- The OID Process does not use a form.
- The requestor sends an email to mace-submit@internet2.edu as explained here https://www.internet2.edu/products-services/trust-identity/mace-registries/#service-registries
- Keith or Jim respond.
- Emily updates the website.
- There has only been one OID request in recent years. That was for TIER.
