Ideas:

  • Skillsets and levels of skillsets - is there a base that you should be working on?
  • Three Lenses: Political (Champions/Detractors, Influencers/Followers), Fiscal (ROI), Strategic (SoaP)
  • Maturity Models
    • EAMM
    • Personal MM
  • Growing a Federated Architecture practice (Pros vs. Cons, where does this fit well, etc.)
  • Minimal Viable Product for your EA Practice
  • UW's EA Practice 2.0 - how we built the backlog, worked the backlog, think about growing
  • Journey Mapping for EA Practices?
  • Lightening Round: Personal Stories - when you were just starting as a solo architect, how did you get started, how did you gain ground?
    • Mark Poepping - CMU
    • Piet Niederhausen - Georgetown
    • Jim Phelps - UW
    • Louis King - Yale
    • Breakout rooms - come back and present stories
      • Google Doc ahead of time for pairing
    • May want to move it out two meetings due to conflict with CSG

Action Items:

Notes from prior planning meetings:

Growing an EA Practice

  1. Strategy on a Page (SoaP): Strategy on a Page
    1. This is an outcome that we see that we can influence - what we do and who we would do it with
  2. Capability Map (both for your EA Practice and your university)
  3. Stakeholder Analysis
  4. Work Planning methodology (e.g. prioritizing the projects you take on)
    1. Exercise: Scenario - have to build an annual work plan (quarter by quarter)
      1. e.g. summer camp (scout projects, turn into firewood)
  5. Program Evaluation
  6. Maturity Assessment
  7. Methodologies (9-10 over 3 meetings)
    1. look at Itana library (e.g. strategic thinking, roadmaps, 25/10 crowdsourcing, etc.)
    2. Think of these methodologies as facilitation opportunities
      1. each has a structured way to reach specific outcomes
      2. can reduce variables of individuals and provide guidance to avoid blockers

Theme Ideas from December 2019 General New2EA Meeting:

  • How to manage and grow your practice
  • Capacity-building models for the EA capability
    • how they have been used, models that people like
  • Determining your start-up outcomes to help deliver value to your institution
  • How to create a talent pipeline for EA and architecture skills
