Announcements - Itana News, Working Group Report out

The Business Architecture Working Group reported they will have a meeting on May 11th.

EAMM Working Group Report-Out

Piet Niederhausen and Louis King demonstrated the Enterprise Architecture Maturity Model (EAMM).

They will also illustrate the success of applying the model.

How do we use the model?

There are 2 entry points:

  1. Doing nothing meaning not having any scope of EA effort

  2. Evaluation of EAMM attributes by having an EA scope in place

The scope should be free to determine what value can be brought to the university.

Features of the EAMM:

  • Open-ended on the high and low sides

  • Attributes can have different maturity levels

  • Attributes are independent.

Beth Schaefer mentioned she was at -1 before and needed someplace to start.  Using this model will work. This can be evidence or rationale for an EA practice.  Set targets at the end of the year. The EAMM can be used as the basis of developing metrics to demonstrate the value of EA.

Louis King mentioned that the group lost all practitioners except himself which required a reset, reframe and reshape.  The group kept the tool alive with some of the original aspirations

Bob Dein from Miami University of Ohio said they will use the EAMM in upcoming goal setting conversations.

Rory O’Neill from the University of Alaska systems mentioned a lack of leadership support and the EAMM can be used as a starting point of the conversation to develop an EA practice.

Jim Phelps mentioned that Architecture happens one way or another through accretion or attempting to apply some discipline to implementation.

Ayodele from George Washington said they had a new CIO and they can use the tool to develop a new strategy

A goal is to link practices on ITANA site to the EAMM.

Jim Phelps mentioned there is an area on the ITANA site where folks can write in the EA level of maturity at their institution. At this point, only the University of Washington has filled out the profile but this could be a good exercise to start with to understand where you are with the EA practice.  https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/itana/Itana+Member+Practice+Profiles

J.J. DuChateau asked about metrics associated with EAMM and the opportunity to measure progress.

The EAMM provides guides on how to improve the EA practice through the following:

  • Plan and Execute-Interventions

  • Using the tools to analyze practice and identify opportunities, plan, and execute

  • Showing outcomes helps with not getting bogged down in metrics

  • Dimensions of scope

  • Showing perspectives with links

Piet Niederhausen talked about how the EAMM can help with scope definition and if you are around level 3 then you have something going.  He also talked about the strategy on a page-template

Jim Phelps mentioned the EAMM can be used as a planning tool with a time dimension.  The EAMM defines what, where, and how.

Rupert Burke asked how does capacity associated with goals fit into the EAMM?

Louis said capacity is associated with the capability.

The EAMM provides goals to evaluate an EA practice.  For example, a team has these capabilities…what can we do with this team….goals.

How do we align our capabilities with goals with what we have?

The EAMM provides a starter set of goals.

The University of Washington is interested in growing capacity in EA skills and would like to embed these skills in workforce development.

Piet said there is need to be a definition of organizational coverage of EA skills.

Betsy Draper is linking the EAMM with current issues at her institution.

Other associated tools:

  • Value Proposition Canvas

    • Customers/Stakeholders

  • BMC Business Model Canvas

  • MMC Mission Model Canvas

Community Contribution to the EAMM to develop the capabilities of the EA Practice:

14:11:36 From J.J. Du Chateau (Wisconsin) : Big thumbs up to how the scope is included.

14:16:25 From ROBERT SNYDER : We at Penn State do not yet have an established practice. We have an Enterprise Architecture Working Group that is self-selecting based on interest across the organization.

14:17:05 From ROBERT SNYDER : Yes

14:17:17 From ROBERT SNYDER : I am in an open space

14:17:37 From ROBERT SNYDER : LOL

14:18:25 From Rory O'Neill (Univ. Alaska System) : U. Alaska System is in a similar state, no appetite for formally recognized EA practice yet some of us know how critical it is because of recurring missteps.

14:19:04 From Rory O'Neill (Univ. Alaska System) : Really like the maturity progression labels, well done,

14:19:21 From Ayodele - The George Washington University: GW has a new President and CIO.

14:19:39 From ROBERT SNYDER : Architecture happens one way or the other

14:20:01 From Ayodele - The George Washington University: the scope of EA is changing.  the Scoping addendum will really help

14:22:06 From Brendan Bellina : At UCLA we have had organization changes with more to come this calendar year. So I think the maturity model will help a great deal in helping us tell the story of what we are doing well or not so well and help to ensure that as we move forward we can demonstrate improvement in our service to the University.

14:26:49 From Ayodele - The George Washington University: adding to the wiki- good idea

14:34:06 From J.J. Du Chateau (Wisconsin) : Business Architecture methods applied to EA.  Love it!

14:34:51 From ROBERT SNYDER : ADC is iterative and self-reflective and self-referential

14:36:25 From J.J. Du Chateau (Wisconsin) : Lots of literature on KPIs vs metrics.  The military uses MoP (Measure of Performance) vs MOE (Measure of Effectiveness)

14:38:52 From Rory O'Neill (Univ. Alaska System) : I would relabel EA as Business Architecture here which would induce the administrators and cabinet members who staff our systemwide IT Council to find their voice when it comes to rationalizing the portfolio of SaaS solutions.

14:39:45 From Rory O'Neill (Univ. Alaska System) : I want the responsibility to rest with cabinet stakeholders as opposed to career IT professionals

14:41:44 From UW : Rory - we are still EA though we are taking a very strong Biz Arch slant and pushing IT to be Biz Transformation Partners

14:46:39 From ROBERT SNYDER : Universities are collections of organizations that are at various business maturity levels and therefore each area is more or less prepared to actively think about architecture and to try to drive it to deliver outcomes.

14:46:48 From UW : Rory - I do think the idea of relabeling your group to be Enterprise Business Architecture is an interesting political move (or EBA/EA)

14:46:52 From Lakshmi Dasari (UCLA) : Good to see VPC mentioned here. BMC/MMC preceding this step would greatly hlep

14:46:57 From Lakshmi Dasari (UCLA) : IMO

14:47:37 From ROBERT SNYDER : The Enterprise is The Business

14:47:54 From J.J. Du Chateau (Wisconsin) : There also Strategizer's Business Model Canvas, and a separate group that created a Service Model Canvas (I've used the latter for strategy planning)

14:50:17 From Ayodele - The George Washington University: I created a Service Model Canvas for GW. I am curious about the Canvas you’ve used J.J

14:52:22 From Dana Miller, Bob Dein-Miami of Ohio to Jim Phelps (Privately) : I would like to see an example of the Service Model Canvas.

14:52:36 From ROBERT SNYDER : Thank you for walking us through the scoping guide

14:53:17 From J.J. Du Chateau (Wisconsin) : Ayodele.  Have to leave for another meeting, send me an email at Jonathan.DuChateau@wisc.edu and we can chat and I can share material.

14:54:13 From Ayodele - The George Washington University: thank you, J.J!  I will

14:54:15 From ROBERT SNYDER : 10 seconds

14:55:10 From Ayodele - The George Washington University: that’s a good idea, Betsy.  I will chronicle our journey at GE

14:55:17 From Ayodele - The George Washington University: GW lol

14:55:26 From Brendan Bellina : This is great food for thought.  I need to chew upon it a little. Thank so much.

14:58:42 From Rory O'Neill (Univ. Alaska System) : Yes, EBA would help bridge this critical organizational trait, capability.  Thanks!

15:01:00 From Ayodele - The George Washington University: Woo Hoo!

15:01:07 From ROBERT SNYDER : See ya.

15:01:08 From Brendan Bellina : Thanks!

15:01:14 From Dana Miller, Bob Dein-Miami of Ohio to Jim Phelps (Privately) : Great material!
