Action Items From Today's Meeting:
[AI] Steve T: Publish these minutes around to the various lists / box folder. DONE: See "20130412.InCommon.Quilt.Pilot.Tech.Call.Notes.docx" in the "Minutes of Pilot Tech Calls" box folder.
[AI] Mark S: Combine Ian's responses with Chris' MDA document.
[AI] Steve O: Put a link to the confluence wiki in Box
[AI] Mark S: Mark would like to speak with Jim Basney from the Interfederation group, to see if there is any overlapping efforts we could benefit from.
[AI] Mark S / Steve O: Mark will also follow up with Steve O. regarding the Wiki – to make it easier to share information.
[AI] All: Check the file "Proxy IdP versus MDA v2.pptx" to the "InC-Quilt Pilot Tech" box folder. Comments / suggestions / corrections are sought by Mark S.
[AI] Steve T: Check Paul's sanitized tarball to make sure the sanitized part is really true. Assuming so, share it on the wiki.

Discussion:
1. Update on the Pilot Definition WG focus
Summarized various potential pilots that people are interested in pursuing (most short-term, some longer-term). The key difference between the two phases is the ones that will happen real quickly/short-term will probably not be too large. The idea is to get some useful takeaways early on. Early pilots will be scoped small. More elaborate projects will be in the 2nd phase, and that is where we get into what inter-federations will look like.
2. Quilt/InCommon Pilot Community Meeting - Thursday, April 18th, 3:00-4:30 PM EDT
This webinar will be for anyone who is interested in doing a pilot. Some one-on-one calls will be scheduled with those groups after the I2MM (which is the following week).

3. Discussion of Next Steps in testing and implementing Regional Sub-federations
Mark would like to have a discussion about our goals moving forward - in particular how we implement a Regional or State Federation using the MDA or a Proxy IdP (or both).
We haven't talked about the details yet on how it actually happens with InCommon. What are the requirements, what is the process? Do we need to put together a cookbook of steps (e.g., use the MDA, set up a proxy, publish/subscribe methodology, what is InCommon going to do with the submitted data, etc.?)
Perhaps we can set up a wiki to help with this.
Also what is the business model (that needs to be approved by InCommon steering), what are the membership class details for regionals, and for their constituents? These issues all ideally would be worked out before we actually start the pilots.
For the pilots, probably InCommon could accommodate some regionals being added, going through the sponsorship process for K12s, and maybe there would be some short-term break (or waiver) of the membership fees. But ideally want to know what the longer-term business model / pricing model might be before participants really want to invest in the pilots.
Another issue to consider is support – perhaps we could have a listserv set up to help in that area. We'll work that out as part of getting the pilots up and running.
The longer term collaborative effort between the admin group and this group is probably the next step (it may be a month or more out there). Input from admin side on business / cost model is needed sooner rather than later.
4. Face-2-Face at I2MM (Who's going?)
Ann West is the only person on this call who is going to the spring I2MM.
November 11-15 is the Identity Week, probably more people will be going there.
5. Your Item Here...
Metadata Aggregator (MDA)
See Chris Giordano's excellent write-up on MDA experiences that he emailed on 4/3/2013, which Mark Scheible saved to the box file "MDA Writeup – Chris Giordano.pdf" in the "InC-Quilt Pilot Tech" box folder.
Chris said Ian said a lot of the simple stuff was done with XSLT simple transformations. There was no place in the documentation that really explained that. You really need to get your brain into a certain mode to deal with XSLT – in Java the xalan processor can help with this. However it is a bit of commitment to get going with it, but once you have some templates going it works really well.
Mark forwarded Chris' write-up, and Ian responded to all of Chris's points. Mark seeks to put it all together with Chris' write-up – it will be really valuable.
Chris indicates the MDA technology is rock-solid. Have learned that Java some times can be a bit cumbersome to set up, but once you're going it just goes. E.g. we have an app server that has been running for something like seven years – it just runs.
One area Chris struggled with was the business-case of how the MDA would be getting used. What would he be slicing and dicing? How would it be used in a pilot?
That's an area where Mark thinks a wiki could help. We could use it to put together the pros and cons of MDA vs, the Proxy IdP option, and how it would work with InCommon. From the regional's perspective, here's what would happen between the K12/CC's and the Regional, and then the interaction between the regional and InCommon. What is the publish and subscribe process.
Chris: If that gets into the wiki you're talking about, someone could set up a config and share it with everyone via the wiki.
Mark would like to speak with Jim Basney from the Interfederation group, to see if there is any overlapping efforts we could benefit from.
Mark will also follow up with Steve O. regarding the Wiki – to make it easier to share information.
Paul's simpleSAMLphp tarball:
Q from Steve: Was somebody going to publish Paul's sanitized simpleSAMLphp config tarball?
A from Paul: It was Keith. But there was an update to it because twitter changed their stuff. Paul sent the tarball to Steve in an email.
Mark's Proxy IdP vs. MDA Powerpoint slide:
Note that Mark recently uploaded the file "Proxy IdP versus MDA v2.pptx" to the "InC-Quilt Pilot Tech" box folder. Comments / suggestions / corrections are sought.
