A LIGO use case
The focus of the LIGO VO is research in to gravitational waves. There is a significant infrastructure, however, outside the research that has its own unique needs in the VO. The finance and business administrators have their own requirements to access document management software, grant information, and more. They have a different set of applications that will need to be accessed out of the CMP.
For the business side, one of the major usage is for the contracts and procurements process.
Here is a summary of what happens in this process:
1. Our systems engineers work on their design drawings (initially accessible only to LIGOLab people).
2. When the design specifications have been finalized, they are made available to the vendors by setting their access level to Public. The procurement people include references to the engineering documents in their Request for Quote (RFQ). There have been times when the procurement people want share the RFQs to vendors without making them public. [So we would need the vendors to have some sort of credentials which would grant them access to our system ... most likely not in the LIGO.ORG realm]
3. When the vendors bid for LIGO contracts, the bids are sent to LIGO where only LIGO business people, management, and directorate can view the documents.
4. The system would allow the vendors to view only their documents and not other vendors' bids.
5. When the contract has been granted to a vendor, we may want parts of the all the vendors' documents viewable to all the bidders.
