*Action Items*

(AI) Dean will send a note to the email list to determine the level of interest in a Campus SP subgroup and, potentially, recruit members.

(AI) Dean will ping the group about interest in a get-together at the Internet2 Member Meeting, April 27-29, in Arlington, VA.

(AI) Dean will create email lists and coordinate phone bridge PINs for the subgroup meetings.

*Subgroup Charters*

There was consensus that the three charters are OK, as presented in the April 3 minutes and on the wiki,

*Use Case Subgroup*

  • Include a look at link resolvers, EZproxy and Shibboleth - how those systems might work together and the options.

Use case ideas from the chat:

  • John Kiser: Penn uses the CNRI handle system (http://www.handle.net/), and I'd be interested to know what other ones are in use. I've no sense of how big a set of such applications exist.
  • Andy Ingham, John Kiser and Thomas Howell have interest in Shib-enabled Fedora
  • Thomas Howell and Paul Hill have interest in remote-hosted ILLiad (an urgent project at Northwestern)
  • Develop the "carrots" to provide with use cases to encourage progress in finding solutions
  • Some use cases have been posted to the wiki: https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/inclibrary/Use+Cases+--+Shib+and+EZproxy

*Vendor Subgroup*

  • Include developing a registry of resource providers and associated information
  • Which are InCommon participants
  • How to work with a particular vendor
  • Shib-enabled vendors
  • Vendors we would like to see Shib-enabled
  • Cross-check with list maintained by UK federation
  • Which support advanced technology, like SessionInitiators
  • Solicit, from the email list, names of vendors that are currently being used in EZproxy configurations
  • Do a broad scan to understand the market - what is happening in Europe, in the U.S., an innovations/SPs on campuses
  • Develop a list of common questions, plus a common approach to vendors.

*Walk-in Patron Subgroup*

What are the deliverbles?

  • List of use cases and various types of solutions people have been proposing to address those walk-in issues.
  • Use cases may include kiosk machines, providing wireless for any library patron, ability for those with campus credentials to use guest kiosks/public machines to log in and use additional features or gain personalization at vendor websites.
  • Another use cases may include Shib recognizing a local machine and providing a guest account to a user.
  • Stanford and MIT run separate IdPs for people external to the campus community
  • Guelph has pointed guests to ProtectNetwork to obtain credentials

These related concepts were listed in the chat room:

  • Michigan State is rolling out a system for guests to request an ID based on an email address they submit, that we can then authenticate through the Shib IdP. There is no identity vetting or proofing, though.
  • Question from Paul Hill at MIT: I assume that we all have patron cards that are issued to some people that are not part of the core community. Does anyone have a pointer to documentation about how they mange these patrons?

*Proposed Campus SP Subgroup*

There was substantial interest among those on the call to form a fourth subgroup to address cases in which campus libraries operate SPs. There was interest expressed by some campuses either hosting or planning to host SPs, including MIT, Northwestern, UNC, MIT and Clemson. (AI) Dean will send a note to the email list to determine the level of interest and recruiting potential members.

*Phase 2 Outcomes*

There was a general discussion about some potential outcomes for Phase 2, once the subgroups finish their work and the full group integrates the pieces:

  • Generate a business case for vendors in the US.
  • Forward/present use cases to vendors to begin a discussion about gaps in services and meeting these needs

*Operation of Subgroups*

After discussion, it was decided that meetings of the subgroups will alternate with meetings of the full group. So, in two weeks, the subgroups will meet; two weeks after that the full group will meet, and so on. (AI) Dean will create email lists and coordinate phone bridge PINs for the subgroup meetings.

*Next Call: Subgroups Meetings, Friday, May 1, 1:00 p.m. EDT*

*Next Full InC-Library Meeting, Friday, May 15, 1:00 p.m. EDT*

  • No labels
