Spring Internet2 Member Meeting
Advisory Committee Meeting
May 8, 2002 Meeting Minutes

Discussion

- Bill and Louis went over the progress to date on the Initiative
and the following action items came out of the discussion:

(1) The Connectivity Survey, now being shared with the Quilt,
will go out to I2 K20 Advisory Team members early this
summer (more on this below).
(2) Advisory Team members will continue to send project
descriptions and "demo-able" materials, along with other
information to populate the website, to LF. LF will continue
to gently remind Advisory Team members to send this information.
(3) We will continue to use this list to alert members to updates
on the website so that they can share this information with
their SEGP stakeholder groups.
(4) With the help of several Advisory Team members, we are
developing an electronic newsletter, which will provide
excerpts (and direct access to) other K20 electronic
newsletters.
(5) We checked with WiscNet and they are willing to provide
support for monthly conference calls during the coming
academic year; we will schedule these soon. (And, many
thanks to WiscNet!)
(6) The Advisory Team expressed interest in collecting best
practices information (e.g., forms, such as talent release
agreements to use when taping students and teachers); in
our next conference, we will be looking for volunteers to
work on this project.

- Project roundtables were held and Advisory Team members engaged in
conversations about (1) H.323, (2) the Lewis & Clark project, and
(3) the Jason project. The H.323 group requested a listserv, which
has been set up; Linda Roos, of OARnet, has agreed to moderate
this list (sign up via the I2 K20 website). Other project roundtable
leaders will report on their efforts in our next conference call.

- Gary Bachula discussed the Digital Opportunities Trust and the
possibility that the expected $18B might be used to fund digital
content of relevance to a range of citizen interests in the US,
including curriculum for schools.

- Steve Corbato gave an overview of the new partner in the K20
Initiative, the Quilt. (More on this below).

- We discussed options for the next face-to-face meeting, but there
was no consensus about which meeting(s) might be best to tag an
Advisory Team meeting on to, so I'll follow up soon with a survey.

o Connectivity Survey. The working group completed a final draft of the
Connectivity Survey and my staff and I are putting an on-line survey
instrument together and will get this to you in the next week.
Ideally, Advisory Team member from each SEGP will coordinate on this
effort, with one team member filling out the form for each SEGP and
submitting it. Specific directions will accompany the notice about
the on-line survey, which you will receive in the next day or so.

o The Quilt - Internet2 K20 Initiative: A New Collaboration

The Quilt is a UCAID Project whose participants are non-profit
advanced regional network organizations dedicated to advancing
research and education in the United States by (a) providing a broad
range of advanced networking services to their constituents, including
network engineering, management, and operation; regional connectivity
and exchange; promotion and coordination of regional activities; and
(b) facilitating innovative and successful projects and productive
working relationships.

The joint effort will be lead by Wendy Huntoon, executive director
of the Quilt, Myron Lowe (Northern Lights) and George Loftus
(NoX/OSHEAN) for the Quilt and Louis Fox for I2. The goal is for the
Quilt activities to complement the ongoing activities established by
the I2 K20 Initiative, specifically to help add a more technical
component to the project. While the Quilt/I2 K20 Initiative will also
begin by focusing on the SEGP's, it is not limited to that community.

We have identified three main areas of focus for our joint effort:
(1) support for the Connectivity Survey; (2) identifing resources and
expertise within the Quilt membership; and (3) engaging support for
I2 K20 workshops (e.g., the I2 K20 - ALA workshop described below),
particularly technical expertise.

o I2 K20 Website. As suggested the website has been expanded to include
more resources for SEGP constituents, information about partners,
"demo-able" materials, etc. Please share our URL with your SEGP
community. (Also note the featured SEGP, Network Virginia).

o I2 K20 Newsletter. The I2 K20 Newsletter will debut in a few days,
both as an email list and on the Web. Please share this first edition
with your SEGP constituents who, if they wish, can then subscribe to
the listserv for I2 K20 News. If you have news/information, please
send it to the I2 K20 newsletter editor, James Werle at
<jwerle@u.washington.edu>.

o Workshops. The K20 Initiative has begun to partner with various
leaders in our stakeholder communities to explore how advanced
networks and applications will impact various aspects of education.
The first workshop, developed in partnership with the American
Library Association and funded by the National Science Foundation,
will be held in August, with 30 library leaders from around the US.
A second workshop on "Early Childhood Education and Internet2" is being
planned in partnership with the Carnegie Foundation. More information
about both workshops will be posted on the I2 K20 website soon.

o Bill Mitchell. As most of you know, Bill has decided to step down as
co-director of the K20 Initiative but will continue to participate
as a member of the Advisory Team. His contributions to this effort
have been many and, on behalf of all the participants in the K20
Initiative, I'd like to express our gratitude for all of your efforts
on our behalf.
