Candidate draft - First Half 2024 CTAB

  • CTAB first half Work Plan is mostly ready

InCommon Futures 2 discussions - continued

  • The InCommon Futures report is not yet final; Kevin appreciates feedback
  • The updated report has been received from Second Muse
  • It changed visually, but not much in terms of content
  • In January 2024 it was suggested to develop a new exec summary and a one page infographic

  • Big buckets : Knowledge and Communication
  • Context:
    • Now that everything is digital, what is IT?
    •  T: Technology, building hardware infrastructure 1990 - 2000
    •  IT:   Information Technology, more about software,   2000 - 2010
    •  I:  Information,  extracting value into hands of decision makers, 2010 -
    • InCommon needs to shift in how we create knowledge and communicate it
    • Sharing expertise
    • InCommon has done the T, done the IT, we need to do the I (Information)

  • There won’t be one reference architecture that will serve all
  • However, we can share models of what community members should aspire to
  • The “how” may be different
  • Example FIM4R meeting, a few years back, looking at AARC blueprint, sharing how infrastructure mapped ot the blueprint  https://aarc-project.eu/architecture/
  • It was noted that there is more pressure these days to buy a product to address IAM
  • A framework for thinking about IAM is valuable
  • Warren: LIGO developed its own IAM system. Had help from people involved with InCommon software, Shib, Grouper, etc
  • Comment: A big overlap in SPs between campus commercial and R&E are cloud providers like AWS
  • There is a need to address many segments
  • InCommon has focused a lot on the needs of R1 schools
  • Solutions for scholarly enterprises
  • Many IAM commercial solutions have come and gone in recent years, InCommon is 20 years old
  • The commercial solutions don’t generally fully address academic needs
  • Pal: The governmentt dimension is extremely important to the IAM work being done in Europe
  • David: Attaching dates to the tiers in layer cake graphic would be helpful.
  • Ryan: Many institutions are stuck in an organizational design that is about 10 years old
  • IAM is no longer a function buried within IT
  • IAM is critical to getting info to the right people and to risk reduction
  • Advocacy on and off campus is crucial

 Questions for CTAB

  • How can CTAB help address particular recommendations?
  • How can all of the standing committees work together differently to help address particular recommendations?
  • Do you see something(s) that strike you as being primarily associated with a committee other than the one you lead?
  • What recommendations strike you as the most urgent? ones that be sequenced for later action?
  • As we "go on the road" with the findings, what are the 2-3 points/recommendations/findings/etc. that you believe should be front and center of messaging?

What does CTAB want to get out of Internet2 CommEx in March? (not discussed on this call)
