Advance CAMP Wrap-Up Session

led by Tom Barton, University of Chicago

Comments about the ACAMP Breakouts

Tom Barton, U. Chicago:

-There were a lot of good breakout sessions during this ACAMP.
     - What were some takeaways?

Rob Carter, Duke and Keith Hazelton, U. Wisconsin-Madison:

    - pleased that campuses (Notre Dame, Clemson, and possibly others) will share their provisioning and integration use cases
    - this will advance the CIFER project's P&I work
       https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/ACAMPScribe2012/Fri+10.00am+Freedom+Room

Chris Phillips, CANARIE

         - it is valuable to get a diverse opinions from community members
        - notable: directory options enhancements has legs
             https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/ACAMPScribe2012/Thurs+2.15pm+Salon6
           - in attribute authority work, these is interest to see formalization of how SP's are classified

Tom Barton, U. Chicago

         - commitment by InCommon Federation to produce a service catalog
         - we need to make it easier for people to find out how to leverage InCommon

Mark Scheible, MCNC

       - got valuable input on how to extend InCommon Federation down to K12
             https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/ACAMPScribe2012/Thurs+3.30pm+Salon4+-+Developing+Federation+Model+Options
             - how the regional state network providers could assist
             - what kind of models could be used
             - there is not one answer, but got a good start on how to look at the model
             - regional networks could extend the models to community colleges and to community anchor institutions

Kara Shirdon, Oracle:

       -  relatively new to HE
        -  this was a good chance to get community feedback
        - hope to do better job of communicating with HE
         - and get more feedback from HE into the development process

Scott Cantor, OSU

     - the breakout on "Use of attribute options in LDAP to express 'metadata' about directory attributes" made forward progress
          https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/ACAMPScribe2012/Thurs+2.15pm+Salon6
     - the plan is to look at use cases for attribute options and standardize
     - need to  map the use cases to the structures and protocols were are using
     - there are probably other use cases we have not explored
     - may not all be federated use case, however this issue will hit federations
     - interfederation will bring that to the picture
      - Scott plans to document the issue and get it greater visibility

John Krienke, Internet2

    - Business and finance questions from the campus perspective were discussed in several sessions
   - questions around "how do I take the temperature, on IdM federated ID, assurance?"
     - how best to explain to the stakeholders the reasons and financial justification to move forward on these issues?
     - how do I talk to the vice provost and CIO about the resources I need?
     - InCommon has universities who have successfully made that case
      - so perhaps InCommon Steering can look at best ways to play a brokering role
      - to help CIOs share the story on how to advocate most effectively

Nicole Harris, JISC:

    -  the session on "Talking to Corporate SPs" looked at how to be smarter at sharing knowledge
    - we can be more successful working together
     https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/ACAMPScribe2012/Fri+10.00am+Salon6+-+Talking+to+Corporate+Service+Provider

Chris Hyzer, University of Pennsylvania:

     -  made progress on looking at a standard API for authorization
        https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/ACAMPScribe2012/Thurs+3.30pm+Salon5
      - hope to use that momentum to develop a standard API
      - people are now more interested in using a standard API compared to last time when this effort was undertaken but not completed
      - and more aligned on what we want it to look like

Dedre Chamberlin, UCSF:

     - got a lot out of the FMM sessions and today's ACAMP breakout on Office 365
     https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/ACAMPScribe2012/Fri+8.45am+Salon3
   - especially interested in how to use Net+ to better leverage vendors
    - how to liaison between middleware and identity management and SP community
    - there must be a formal intake process for the Net+ vendors
     - what info can we arm the Net+ staff with to increase effectiveness in stressing middleware requirements when negotiating contracts?

Steven Carmody, Brown:

    - Great to see how ACAMP engagement and participation level has increased dramatically
    - this ACAMP was 3 times larger and level of engagement is higher than seen before
    - no longer a small core of people driving the discussion

Suggestions for ACAMP Moving Forward

Unconference Format:

- for agenda creation, have people announce their proposed sessions before the step of placing a session on an agenda timeslot
- then there is less of a cluster around the wall
- and people might be more willing to throw out session ideas
-  the group votes on the sessions they want (by putting a mark on the sticky for the sessions they like)
- not all session proposals necessarily get scheduled

- StevenC: at other gatherings, a lot more merging and splitting than I saw happen this time
- maybe use smaller sticky notes for the proposed sessions
-Keith: thought the level of merging and splitting was OK

- the pitching of sessions ahead of time on the ACAMP mailing list may have had influence on the posting of ideas

- Scotty Logan, Stanford: suggestion to do agenda creation each morning
- longer wrap up at end of each day
- have time to think overnight
- only schedule one day at a time

Appending ACAMP to Another Meeting

Q: Going forward, should ACAMP be appended to an Internet2 member meeting or is better when it is a stand alone event?

Note: there were about 65 people in the room for the "votes" (shows of hands) reported below.

Options:

1. short ACAMP but tacked onto another meeting -- 30 people prefer
2. standalone ACAMP - 11 people prefer

- suggestion to have an overlap with an Internet2 member meeting if possible
- where ACAMP starts on Wed. instead of on Thursday

- For those who attended Fall Member Meeting and then ACAMP, this was a long week

- How many ACAMP attendees were not at FMM?
- 21 raised their hands

- 4 people came to the Internet2 FMM specifically because of ACAMP

- 11 people prefer it if ACAMP were a longer standalone

- 12 people would most likely not attend ACAMP if it was tacked onto something other than an Internet2 member meeting

Other meetings to potentially attach ACAMP to?
- Jasig, Kuali, REFEDs, Internet Identity Workshop (IIW)

Michael Gettes, CMU:
   -  REFEDs or EMC2 along with ACAMP
  - could lead to interesting cross pollination

Focus of ACAMP Topics

Ken Klingenstein, Internet2

      - this camp was about identity and access management
     - should we also emphasize topics like enterprise services bus?
     - should we continue keeping the focus on IdM versus focusing on a broader of middleware?

Paul Caskey, University of Texas:

-Breakout session on CI and IAM looked at the tools that exist and how to do research on metadata
    https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/ACAMPScribe2012/Thurs+2.15pm+Salon4+Research+CyberInfrastructure+and+IAM
this topic is both inside and outside of the IdM space

Keith: event driven message ESB is coming up under the P&I umbrella
- the hybrid is good
- use a broad definition of IAM

Q: if there had been an ESB session, would people have attended?
A: yes

Workflow and security are also good topics for potential future focus

Q: How many people in room are the IT architects or fill that role in your institution?
A: 15 people

The Advance CAMP Program Committee will be in touch with an email link to an evaluation and links to the ACAMP Scribing notes.
