  • Overview of upcoming K20 meeting topics -

  • National Broadband Plan
    • Many of the recommendations put forth by our community were incorporated into the national broadband plan including allowing community colleges to be included in e-rate.
    • Gary Bachula and a representative from the FCC will speak to the K20 group on the National Broadband Plan at the Monday 4/26 K20 meeting in DC.
  • Recent K20 support of UCAN
    • UCAN puts forth the notion that there needs to be an increased interconnection between the existing connectors and regional networks. improves the national middle mile, thus allowing better access to existing connectors.
    • Internet2 and NLR along with Indiana university NOC are partnering closely on this proposal.
    • Attached is a memo providing some additional background on the NLR/I2 US UCAN proposal as well as a copy of the Executive Summary from the proposal itself.
    • Internet2 has put together a great summary page including a BTOP FAQ and links to the various FCC filings http://www.internet2.edu/government/opportunities.html
    • Not designed to compete with existing regional networks. UCAN will play a coordinating role and enhance the ability of the regional network to connect the community anchor institutions.
    • UCAN will help increase the richness of the Internet2 K20 community by adding to list of organizations connected via SEGP
    • Tim Sizemore - How can ISTE help support the UCAN proposal?
    • TO DO:  Heather T will take the question back to Internet2 and send a response.
    • TO DO Heather T will also send around a list of letters of support for UCAN.
    • If the UCAN proposal gets the due diligence phase the group recommended Internet2 reach out to  COSN and ISTE to obtain their support.
    • Denise offered to serve as a intermediary between representatives from COSN and ISTE with Internet2.
    • Tim - would like to set up a call with an Internet2 staff member working on the UCAN proposal to discuss further.
    • TO DO: Heather will help set this up.
  • Broadband stimulus activities in SEGP -
    • CO - several round one BTOP proposals have reached the due diligence phase.
    • OarNet - partnering with 2 local telephone companies in a proposal to cover the middle mile (and increasing last mile availability) in OH.
    • CA - no round one proposals were funded, resubmitting several proposals for round two.
    • KY - working on a round two proposal for the KY RON.  Still waiting to hear on details but will likely be focusing on bandwidth and building on existing infrastructure.
  • Working group updates -
    • K20 Collaborations team - the goal of this pilot project is to look at what is needed to conduct a single project in K-12 that utilize the resources available via the Internet2 network.   The team will be providing more details at the spring MM.
    • Remote Instrumentation group -  goal is to increase awareness and use of advanced network-enabled remote instrumentation and data visualization resources within the Internet2 K20 Initiative and Teaching and Learning communities.
  • SEGP project updates
    • CO update - Jeff Custard provided the CO SEGP data.  Will check out what remote instrumentation resources are available in CO and report back to the working group.  Working with the Denver Museum of Science and hope to connect them to Internet2 via the CO SEGP soon.  They currently do expert video conferencing from remote archeological dig sites and hope to do much more.  Denise is also working with the CO Historical Museumand hope to connect them soon as well.
    •  TX - Carol recently spoke with educational director at the George Walker Bush Presidential Library.   Working on getting other presidential libraries connected to Internet2 and involved in a project.
    • ND - Kim Owen - Getting ready to conduct the first NPS videoconference event the week of April 19.  For a number of the participating parks this will be their debut doing educational outreach via IVC.
    • PA - Heather Weisse-Walsh - participating in a K-12 professional development session with Holocaust Memorial Museum staff.  Piloting a virtual reality project (get a link).
