Validation Policies - InCommon Federation
Albert Wu, federation service manager, joined the meeting to discuss potential changes in how InCommon validates a service.
National Institutes of Health
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been reviewing the security plans around all of their services (there are hundreds spread among many departments). Some changes are starting to show up, such as the requirement for multi-factor authentication.
The first deadline has come from the electronic research administration portal (eRA), which has set a September 15 deadline for all users to use MFA. In addition, the NIH central IT operation is relying on the REFEDS MFA profile.
InCommon has become involved, since federated access is one of the options for signing on to eRA. Both eRA and InCommon have developed communications campaigns; eRA will communicate with their researcher account holders, while InCommon will communicate to site admins and InCommon execs.
There is also discussion at NIH to implement identity proofing requirements contained in NIST publication 800-53 (fifth revision).
