Background document for this meeting

Move to Online Training

  • InCommon has offered Shibboleth training for about 10 years
  • Last year we started expanding training to include the other software components (Grouper, midPoint, and COmanage)
  • We had planned to move into a learning management system this year to make the training more accessible. The pandemic accelerated that process
  • Spring courses will use the content used for F2F, but redesigned to use an LMS
  • Registrations are a little behind what we typically see for in-person training, but tracking well
  • The online training will include a mix of instruction and self-paced. We will also introduce open office hours for attendees to ask questions after the fact.

BaseCAMP moving online

  • Last year was the first time we offered BaseCAMP, an introductory workshop (2.5 days) on identity management and federation
  • We will move BaseCAMP online this year, offering it four hours per day over five days (July 20-24)
  • Priced it lower to reflect that it is online and also to try to attract more newcomers

eduroam and Growth

  • A number of organizations are using eduroam in different ways to accommodate students who are not on campus, including deploying hotspots to cover parking lots, buses, trains, and other non-traditional venues.
  • A special edition of the IAM Online webinar series will be held May 18 to provide three examples of how schools are leveraging eduroam in general and during the pandemic

Push for Research and Scholarship

  • This effort originated with a message from Chris Whalen (who provides infrastructure support to NIH) to InCommon and GEANT to promote “collaboration ready” as more researchers and scientists join collaborations related to COVID-19
  • In this case, "collaboration ready" means supporting the global REFEDS Research and Scholarship (R&S) Entity Category by providing certain directory information on sign-in. This enables researchers access to qualified Service Providers that "just works.” The research community has said that supporting R&S across all IdPs in the federation is the single best thing we can do to enable research
  • We’ve seen 31 IdPs move to REFEDS R&S since the push started on March 26, and now have a total of 162. We're tracking the R&S uptake here: https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/federation/refeds-r-and-s-dashboard

Upcoming Agendas

There was discussion and a reminder about some of the agenda items planned for the next few Steering meetings:

  • Update on the InCommon Trusted Access Platform
  • Steering member recruiting (may need to do more of that online
  • Workforce needs (average age of IAM architects is climbing) - topic of IAM Online for June
  • Continuing to adapt to the pandemic and how campuses are planning for the fall
  • Keep in mind as community members move toward solutions, are there things that InCommon, TAP, or other Internet2 services might help
