Educause Meeting
The group discussed the ITANA session at the Educause 2010 Annual Conference: October 12 - 15, Anaheim, California. Conference details are available here: http://www.educause.edu/E2010
(AI) - Marina - will coordinate/facilitate the ITANA session at Educause.
Points to consider in planning the ITANA Session:
- Is it possible to connect to the ITANA session by phone and/or Skype?
- The audience of the ITANA session includes anyone who is interested in Enterprise Architecture and who is interested in what the ITANA WG has been working on.
- The ITANA session is not typically recorded; normally, Jim takes notes or asks someone to scribe the session.
Potential topics to discuss during the ITANA Session include:
- An introduction of attendees at the session: names, institutions, and topics they are interested in discussing with the ITANA group.
- A discussion of the EA in higher education survey - this may be a good topic to start with, and could prompt a number of discussion items.
- List the topics that have been the focus of inquiry within the ITANA group to provide a sense of what ITANA has been working on recently.
- Solicit input from attendees: what would they be interested in seeing the ITANA WG focus on in the future?
- Q&A Session

Case Studies of Architectural Review Boards at different institutions:
Penn State has a "local" version of an ITANA-type group that acts as an Architectural Review Board (ARB) for the campus. They are currently reviewing the architecture for the new identity management infrastructure at Penn State, and will help constituent groups as they go through installation and implementation of the new technologies. The ARB group will act in an advisory capacity (as opposed to prescriptive). Some of Penn State's ARB activities were adapted from a model of similar groups at the University of St. Louis and University of Minnesota.
(AI) - Jim L. - will champion the Architectural Review Board (ARB) Topic of Interest.
Possible questions to consider regarding ARBs include:
- Is the ARB group prescriptive or advisory in its role?
- How are constituent groups encouraged to refer to their institution's ARB (or comparable group)?
- What kinds of materials are provided as work product?
- At what stage in the lifecycle does the ARB get called in?
IT Assessments
Many institutions are engaged in Information Technology assessments, as well as assessments in other areas (registrar processes, human resources, etc.). It would be of interest to see how different institutions engage in large-scale assessments, particularly of IT but also other units on campuses. One possible outcome could be discussing experiences with consultants.
This topic will need a champion if it is adopted as a Topic of Interest.
