Shibboleth for Libraries

Libraries face the challenge of providing their users access to online resources such as databases and catalogs while, at the same time, adhering to the licensing agreements with vendors. Users want access not only from a computer within the library, but also from a variety of remote locations.  This presents a challenge when using an IP address range, for example, as the basis for allowing access.

The InCommon Library Services Project formed to explore solutions to these challenges.  The project was started in 2007 to explore the issues in implementing access to library services and electronic resources using Shibboleth authentication. Shibboleth provides single sign-on convenience to protected resources. Patrons use their campus userID and password and Shibboleth leverages the existing campus identity management system for authentication. The vendor no longer maintains a list of IP addresses, nor an identity database, but instead accepts information provided by the campus identity system (through Shibboleth).

This group is also exploring the combination of Shibboleth and EZProxy. EZProxy can use Shibboleth for initial user authentication, providing a single login for both remote access and campus resources, as well as a seamless user experience when transitioning individual resource access from IP to Shibboleth.

The project consists of six institutions: Cornell University, Penn State, UC San Diego, The University of Chicago, University of Maryland, and the University of Washington.

What is Shibboleth?

An overview of Shibboleth federated single sign-on software and its applications with library services.

Deploying Shibboleth

Information about using Shibboleth to leverage your identity management system and deploy the software in a library setting. This section also includes information about potential sponsored partners (vendors who are members of other federations and, so, are already operating with Shibboleth).

Use Cases

Use cases will be presented, providing information about using Shibboleth in a library setting and about successful implementations at other institutions.

Presentations

See presentations from various meetings on using Shibboleth in a library setting.
