Signet QuickStart
If you would like an easy way to explore Signet and make simple customizations, the Signet QuickStart offers a pre-packaged version of Signet. While the Signet QuickStart is not intended to be used in production mode, you may load actual data and configure site specifics. It is not recommended to be load-tested or upgraded, as is the core Signet download.
Download the Signet-QuickStart, which comes pre-loaded with:
- two Subsystems,
- a subject population, and
- a set of initial assignments.
When initially installed, it is set up with:
- roles (as described in the Demo below), and
- a good set of assignments to demonstrate a fully functional Signet.
To experiment with a running instance of the Signet QuickStart, see the Signet Demo link below or visit the Signet Mockup.
Signet Demo
You may explore the Signet Demo at http://signet-demo.stanford.edu/. This instance starts out matching the QuickStart demo, but will change over time as people access it and make assignments.
Background
The demo system is for that fictitious institution of Higher Ed - the Kern Institute of Technology, Northam (KITN). The name came about through an early, joking design constraint on initial mockups - that there be no cute kittens on the page (the designer being a cat lover). She rose to the challenge with KITN as the acronym, and a cool wildcat logo that we are proud to keep. Originally "Kansas Institute of Technology, Nashville", we gave the name a more international spin beginning with Signet v1.0:

Roles & Data Set
Here is the cast of players:
Name | Title | Role in Demo | Loginid |
---|---|---|---|
Chris O'Malley | President | nothing yet | comalley |
Pat Worthington | Chief Financial Officer | nothing yet | patworth |
Francis Dewey | Head of Libraries | Ur-grantor, Library privs | fdewey |
Avery Page | Library, IT Services | Subsystem owner, Libraries | apage |
Terry Michaels | Library, Acquisitions | In libraries | tmichaels |
Lou McNee | Library, Reference Services | In libraries | lmcnee |
Jean Poole | Principal Investigator, Bio-X project | Ur-grantor, Bio-X privs | jpoole, aka "demo" |
Dana Petri | Chair, Biology Department | Subsystem owner, Bio-X | dpetri |
Lee Saito | Professor, Biology Department | In Bio-X project | lsaito |
Ari Davidov | Administrator, Biology Department | In Bio-X project | adavidov |
Kai Martinez | Program officer, Central IT | Signet system administrator | kmart |
There are an additional 100+ other individuals (mostly "Professors" in random departments) to provide fodder for assignments. As a convenience, everyone in the demo population has a searchable attribute with the value "all", so that searching for the value "all" will bring up a list of everyone at KITN.
Logging In to the Demo
Login to the demo using any of the login IDs shown above, using a common password of "signet". You can also log into the demo as user demo, an alternate loginid for Jean Poole for backward compatibility, and is simpler to remember.
Act as Signet (the top-level grantor)
A system administrator may have no other privileges than to delegate the creation of assignments to others. In effect, it means that they do not create assignments, though they can grant proxies to others. For a specialized view within Signet:
- grant a proxy to another user, such that they can then Act as Signet.
Grant proxies by logging into one of these roles:
- Signet System Administrator (kmart) or
- subsystem owner (apage or dpetri)
Note: kmart is not set up to create assignments; see below.
Create an Assignment
To experiment with creating an assignment, login as fdewey or jpoole, as their pre-defined privileges allow them to grant. Then search for a subject ('*' will bring up the complete list of subjects from which you may choose) and proceed to create the assignment by filling in the details of scope, category, limits, etc.
Note: These two users -fdewey and jpoole- have all privileges for their respective subsystems, so are good logins to use for exploring Signet from the typical well-privileged user's point of view. They each have been granted privileges under the other's subsystem to make either role richer. A few assignments have been made to their subordinates to show assignments already in place.
See the Roles and Internal Privileges document for more information.
Notes About the Sample Subject Population and Searching
- The demo version of Signet accesses subject information uses a database reference version of a "Subject Source Adaptor" that implements the draft Internet2 Subjects Interface (ref. to draft specification). Such source adaptors are designed to plug Signet into your enterprise source of subject information.
- The Demo uses its adaptor to search a local table of subject information. As noted below, specific behaviors were chosen in this implementation, but a site is free to implement any search behavior they wish through this interface. Signet will provide updated reference source adaptors as the I2 Subject spec is finalized.
- A name search can be for a last name only, or a last name plus first/middle names or initials. Name searching can be in either "first last" or "last, first" form. All these searches will work for Jean Poole:
- Jean Poole
- Poole, Jean
- J Poole
- Poole, J
- Poole
- The population contains two groups - "Bio-X project team" and "Library Acquisitions Staff". Group searches are by keyword.
- The following entries exist in the subject population to expressly provide test material for the subject interface:
- A name with an apostrophe - Chris O'Malley
- A name with double quotes - RL "Bob" Morgan
- A compound last name - Garner-Lewis, Stephanie
- A common attribute of "all" to find and display all members of the population
- Multiple entries with the last name "Cohen" to give a more realistic multiple search result
- A multipart compound last name - Temple-Nugent-Chandos-Brydges-Grenville, Lady Caroline Jemima
- An absurdly long name, to see what happens - Laochamroonvorapongse, Warnakulasuriya Patabendige Ushantha Joseph Chaminda Vaas
