SDN:
-On the last call talked about the GENI terminology and how to make it more generally understood.

  • Deniz discussed some of her research.
-There has been a discussion about the idea of Open Flow (SDN) peering on the mailing list. This discussion will continue. The GLIF has a similar discussion going on.
-They will be having a WG meeting at TIP. Looking for agenda topics.

Internet2 Update:
1) The transition from the Infinera system to the BTOP funded Ciena system is complete. The last waves were moved over last friday (11/30/12). The NOC has stopped monitoring the Infinera system. Chris pointed out that the Infinera system was a leased system and that Level (3) is planning on repurposing the network. This in response to some earlier questions about availability of parts from that network.

5) There are a few new projects starting:

  • Deploying the new MX routers.
  • This will get going in earnest during the 1st Quarter of 2013.
  • Currently looking at prioritization of locations. If anyone has a reason or need for an MX in a particular router location please let Internet2 know.

Bill Owens asked about how deeply into the regional or campus network the AL2S capabilities were installed.

  • At this point we are not really sure. MAGPIE does have an IDC running. IU and Ohio seem to be using the 100G link now mostly for IP backhaul. They are allowed to access their contracted IP bandwidth over the Advanced Layer 2 Service network.

Jeff Bartig asked about public access to tools like Looking Glass for the AL2S devices. It was pointed out to them that there were links on noc.net.internet2.edu for the available tools.

...

Jeff Bartig asked if the same number of interfaces were purchased for the MX's as already existed on the T1600's?

  • There were certainly enough interfaces bought to cover all of the existing 10G interfaces. As well there were more 100G interfaces bought.
Follow on question: Will connectors have the option to connect to the routers at 100G?
  • That will continue to be an option, just as it is now.
  • It will be possible to get 100G in Chicago for instance however that can be supplied, either by upgrades to the MX's or other means.

Advanced Layer 2 Services node discussion:
Besides the Brocades the BTOP funds were used to obtain 10 more MX's for AL2S. This is an opportunity to open the discussion about where those devices need to go. At present Jacksonville, Raleigh and Seattle are certainly planned. Internet2 is interested in hearing where the community might like the rest of them to be located. Do not feel like you are constrained in making suggestions, this should be considered an invitation for this discussion.
