Agenda:

  • 5 Year Roadmap - Ron Kraemer
  • 13th final committee seat-
    • two names for consideration to represent research interests. Jeff Erickson (NIH) and Warren Anderson (LIGO)

Minutes:  Ron shared his slides.    https://internet2.edu/the-internet2-five-year-roadmap/ and a brief discussion on the emphasis being getting community input. We will be talking to several groups including ELT, Staff, Board members, Advisory groups, working groups and other communities of interest.  Once the three phases of the roadmap are complete there will be a discussion at the May Internet Community exchange in Atlanta.  Some of the discussions relating to Steering work were as follows:

Shape the next trust and identity ecosystem

Create easier access to Internet2 solutions

Deploy improved interfaces to trust and identity tools

Advance work in compliance, security, and privacy

Play a larger role in managing, curating and accessing “big data” resources and embracing “data ubiquity”

Help the community take advantage of evolving cloud, research, and education capabilities

The question of what new Internet2 services, solutions, or capabilities could help you create opportunities or address challenges faced by those you serve? was asked and several were mentioned by the group.

It was stated that we will be listening across a wide spectrum of folks including InCommon. This roadmap is more of a guiding light for where folks will fit in.  Ron discussed how  a lot of what we are hearing in the community is not about how things work but how the community learns about what we have to offer and how they can get access to them and use them. Thoughts from the group were discussed, some of which are below

    • It's more of a union of 2 capabilities- a network
    • Services are starting to touch and come together because of the needs. A lot of integration and the efforts are already on the way.
    • Integration across I2 services will help make our jobs easier
    • Eduroam is so critical in accessing, there are so much more skills that are still needed. Communication is key
    • This being a challenging space and a great opportunity to engage the community

Ron emphasized data is the fuel that drives all this. Others added that they are really encouraged about support for research and big data being of interest. This mirrors what is been seen in the other communities  (Open Access publishing, metadata, data standards…)

    • This is all bringing the world of research and CIO’s together that will be very positive for the community
    • Sean Reynold's team is very involved, NIH data sharing and compliance- he is a champion for all the voices

There is a need to  get them working for smaller institutions with smaller operating budgets who don't have the expertise or people to do the research. We  need a very clear HOW. The group discussed how Internet2 can bring people together to deliver.  Some are starting to replace programming teams with business analyst teams.  Others asked how will this sustain us for the 5 years forward? Concerns about the budget planning and organization structure were discussed along with how the financial working groups will be prioritizing and looking at the most valuable things.

We are in a great position to work together with industry moving forward. We need communication and education on services and what is available. The more we broaden participation the better position we will be in working with vendors. Providing support for all end points in the “how” is important for broadening usage.
