Trust and Identity Program Advisory Group Meeting - May 11, 2020

Minutes

Attending: Klaas Wierenga, Brad Christ, Ted Hanss, Tom Jordan, Mark Johnson, Kevin Morooney, Dean Woodbeck, Ann West, Steve Zoppi

Move to Online Training

  • Moving training and meetings online
  • Did a midPoint training online last year and it seemed to go well
  • So far, registration for upcoming COmanage, Grouper trainings are ok. Upcoming midPoint training is very low

BaseCAMP

  • The first BaseCAMP was last year in Milwaukee. The entry-level workshop responds to calls to "make the tent bigger" and involve new people in InCommon
  • This year’s will be virtual - July 20-24 - half days each day. 15 registered so far
  • There was discussion about the audience and the pricing. BaseCAMP, the trainings, and probably TechEx will basically be a time for experimentation in those areas. For example, we are charging for a virtual BaseCAMP and don’t know how many will sign up. In NET+, we unpacked a GCP workshop planned for Global Summit into four two-hour webinars over the month of May. It is free. 150+ attended the first.
  • Discussion about meetings/workshops going forward, what types of production values people expect. What the delivery will look like.

eduroam

  • Discussion about extending the reach of eduroam in the U.S., such as through regional networks, to reach K-12.
  • Pandemic has caused an increase in interest in eduroam, as well as some tweaking in use. It is a way to serve those without connectivity or without broadband (hot spots in parking lots, for example)
  • Klaas - in Europe, eduroam usage is below weekend levels because people aren’t traveling
  • Klaas also shared an initiative by Cisco - OpenRoaming - wireless access for company guests that looks a lot like eduroam. The wireless broadband alliance has discussed it and other companies are interested. They brought the idea to GEANT (as the global eduroam operator) and GEANT is also interested.

Push for Research & Scholarship uptake

  • The push, which started in late March after a request from a U.S. government research agency, has resulted in 35 new identity providers adopting R&S, for a total of 167 InCommon IdPs now supporting the category.
  • InCommon will continuing the outreach

Pandemic and Trust/Identity Services

There was a general discussion about the effect the pandemic has had on trust and identity services. There has been a falloff in eduroam in Europe. Some countries are seeing an increase in the use of federation; others have not, so it is a mixed bag. Some of the concerns emerging from universities that have moved to online courses and work-at-home orders include the proctoring of high-stakes examples, and the need for a higher level of trust in accessing business systems (like HR and payroll).
