Background

CACTI invites you to participate in a consultation on the proposed charter for the Internet2 eduroam Advisory Committee (eAC). The success of eduroam is built with the passion and wisdom of the R&E community. To keep pace with continued adoption in the US and cultivate a sustainable environment for eduroam’s growth CACTI invites eduroam connector organizations, service operators, and networking practitioners to review and contribute comments on the eAC charter to help shape the US eduroam service.

eduroam-US provides a secure and privacy-preserving wireless roaming

Currently, widespread use of real outer identities and absence of strict PKI based two-way authentication delivers less than secure and privacy-preserving roaming. While not wanting specific requirements in the Charter, there should be some recognition of need to drive changes toward greater security and privacy, including adopting stronger requirements in GÉANT's verson of eduroam.David.Bantz@alaska.eduNo change made. This falls under the duties of the eAC under section 2.2
2"and is a participant in the global eduroam service, operated by GÉANT."the Global eduroam Governance Committee (GeGC) is not noted in the document. Internet2 being a member of this - is the eAC to provide recommendations/requirements to their representative to table at GeCG?Modified section 2.1 to include this
3"serve one-year terms to begin on January 1 and end on December 31."whilst neat for calendar, doesnt align nicely for handover process (holidays) nor the usual academic/business quarters
No change made. These dates are specified by InCommon's governance procedures.
4"all participating institutions."eduroam can be delivered via commercial and other WISP offerings - eg airports/shopping malls, city-municipal coverage
No change made. This is addressed in the second sentence of the referenced paragraph.
5"research and education (R&E) eduroam operators"National Roaming Operators (NROs) not mentioned in the document
Modified section 2.1 to include this.
6"Selection of Chair and Vice Chair"The duties of the Chair are defined in 1.2 ("The eAC chair participates in CACTI meetings as the eAC representative.") and 6 ("Either regular calls or face-to-face meetings may be canceled by the eAC Chair in consultation with Internet2 staff.") However, no duties are defined for the Vice Chair. We may want to spell out something like "in the event of the temporary absence of the eAC Chair, the Vice Chair may assume their duties under sections 1.2 and 6 during that period."
Modified section 1.2 to include this.
7Duties of the eACMay want to include Internet2 CAP (Community Anchor Program) as an organization for the eAC to engage with, as many Community Anchor Institutions would be excellent sites for eduroam SPs (likely supported by local HE institutions or Regional Network Providers).  Regional Network Providers that are supporting or implementing eduroam for their constituents might want to have a representative on the eAC as well.mscheible@mailbox.mcnc.orgMark Beadles (osu.edu)Modified section 2.1 to include "community groups/programs" to avoid referencing a particular program name.
8NitInclude page numbers in footer, update links to new Internet2 web site when it goes live.
Added page numbers. New Internet2 website not yet live.

"The eAC will consist of at least seven and no more than thirteen
appointed members. The membership should include representatives from
the various constituencies that make up the eduroam-US community."

It says it "should" include representatives from the various
constituencies, but it still does not say anything like at least one
R1 University Rep, at least 1 Community College Rep, One Internet2
rep, 1 RON/REN, etc. So there is not any language to really try and
ensure that diversity of organization type on the eAC.

I was thinking the same thing - Mark

No change made. InCommon's community advisory groups consider the balance of community representation within sectors during their membership processes, but the community changes over time. Thus, the desire to avoid putting specific requirements around representation in the charter.
