Internet2 - Federation Soup Federation Soup: An Assembly of Ingredients June 2-4, 2008 Seattle, WA Home || Agenda || Roster || Final Report (PDF) NEW Program Committee Chair Workshop Flywheel RL "Bob" Morgan - University of Washington Steve Olshansky, Internet2 Summary: Federations - trust mechanisms built on federating technologies such as Shibboleth, and on complementary policy mechanisms - are growing rapidly in a wide variety of environments. Unlike most other countries, where national level federations cover the R&E landscape, a rich broth of federations is occurring in the US. Due to the size and complexity of the US educational environment, all manners of communities are federating: Multicampus university systems Statewide community college consortia Statewide K-20 associations Hospitals and medical centers US Government agencies This workshop is intended to work through the issues in making this mix of federations effective in their interactions with each other and with international partners. While there will be some discussion of technological topics, and a brief look at technical futures, the emphasis will be on policy and business issues. Topics in this space include attributes, levels of assurance, handling of legal issues (including privacy, liability, adjudication, etc.), business models, support of virtual organizations, future collaboration management support business opportunities, etc. Those topics will be explored to identify the options for each, and where consensus approaches among federations would facilitate interactions. In addition, we hope to identify some persistent mechanisms for the soup “ingredients” to engage in during this period of invention and deployment. Key issues to be addressed include: Communities served, application purposes Points of consistency in a multifederated world Attributes, LOA, and other standards End-user privacy management and other technical futures Making federations effective Relationships with the K-12 sector Needs for multiple profiles within a federation Business models and organizational governance approaches 1 of 2 Internet2 - Federation Soup Future business opportunities Workshop Program The program will be published here when it is available.
