Internet2 network updates
Rob mentioned that an email was sent indicating that dates met on NY to Cleve to Boston route. He said that we have 10 waves on those routes and colo on those routes. The Qwest router that was in Chicago has gone to Atlanta and Internet2 is actively getting ready to get people on the Atlanta ring. Rob mentioned that we are moving farther west in terms of planning with activity in Houston and KC. Rob noted that Internet2 will end up in new building in LA (600 Wilshire) but expect no problems associated with that.
Commodity peering
Dan Magorian mentioned he and Jose will be sending something to the peering list and be making some calls. Dan indicated that there was a good face-to-face meeting (Gigapops Geeks) at JT. Dan mentioned that Steve Wallace fielded questions nicely and a good set of discussions ensued regarding the role of the services and what needs to be done about these services. That appeared to help with planning process. Dan mentioned that there will be a call for the group on March 20, 2007. He hopes to be able to tell people about the taxonomy.
Dave Farmer:
Dave Farmer mentioned that he has been thinking about stats and netflow data and he is wondering what that all means for commodity transit and peering for the new network.
Dave suggested that the data for the new network be treated like the rest of the observatory data. Matt Z added that Internet2 has usage data on all interfaces and on peering data as well as having flow data on usages. Matt also mentioned that the data is anonymized by zeroing out the last 11 bits. Matt Z went on to say that if anyone wants data from within repository, they would need to request access from Rick Summerhill and agree to use the data only for research purposes. Dave made the point that this is the community's data and Matt Davey mentioned that researchers indicate that this is important data and is difficult to obtain outside of R&E space. Dave suggested that Internet2 have a written agreement explicitly stating that breaking the anonymization is not acceptable
The group recommended:
Make the newnet data available to the community with a written agreement.
HOPI updates:
Jerry Sobieski reported that HOPI is being rolled over to the new backbone as the roll-out of the new network progresses. He reported that Chicago to Washington to NY is online.
Jerry added that a GMPLS workshop will be held beginning on March 13 at NYU. The workshop will show participants how to design, deploy, configure the dynamic GMPLS-based control plane. Jerry added that an Infinera control plane is a project for the future and Dave Farmer mentioned that BOREASnet would like to participate. Dan Magorian mentioned that this is a topic of interest to the DWDM interop group and how it interfaces with HOPI. Jerry mentioned that as summer approaches, he expects to have workshops and may be able to adapt the code to other kinds of switching fabrics. Jerry said that he will have a better idea regarding how the workshops will work after the first one has been held. Rick Summerhill and Susan Evett are the keepers of the workshop schedule.

Measurement Working Group
Eric reported that, at the last face-to-face meeting, it was unclear which groups would be in charge of which things. People are interested in the topics and it is not clear how to best cover the topics among the tutorials, SIGS, etc. So, a proposal was put forward for a performance measurement group would be the main group and would meet at the and discuss performance-related topics that would be of interest to the group and spin off working and advisory groups from that group as needed. Paul or Eric will send email to ask what topics to address during the spring member meeting and Matt will help organize the responses.
Dave Farmer comment
Dave Farmer would like to propose 10gig IP and 1gig for dynamic service to start. Dave mentioned that many people believe that it is worth having the dynamic services but not at the 10gig level and they would like to begin with 1gig to develop a business case for the connection.

Paul made a comment that it is not clear what the p. 17 diagram that explains switched service is trying to convey.
layer 2 working group
Members of the community had expressed interest to Paul in a working group for layer 2 services. At the last NTAC meeting, Cort volunteered to lead the group. Paul asked whether the work on DRAGON is meeting needs of Internet2 and, what needs the community has for a layer 2 service. The group indicated that a layer 2 group might provide feedback to Internet2 on what services to be provided as well as standardized ways to provide them. Dan mentioned that there was a forum at JT to understand non-layer 3 networks. He went on to say that GLIF has interesting documents and that there is a whole series of areas that as providers need to be aware of and have coordination of activities. Discussion ensued regarding the scope of activities for the group. John suggested that the group create a specific charter, fulfill that charter and disband. Dan suggested that, as services are deployed on the new network, a working group needs to discuss how well the services are meeting the needs of the community. It was suggested that there be a dynamic services delivery mechanism working group to figure out what the specific subgroups deliverables are. It was suggested that the working group needs to be working toward some objective, that is, a deliverable, perhaps to come up with a set of recommendations. The group recommended that a dynamic services users group be formed to act as a formalized place to get together and share war stories. After that initial work is done, then the group would have a better sense as to what needs to be solved.
It was recommended that the layer 2 services working group be chartered for a year to focus on initial implementations of dynamic services on the internet2 network and to provide a report at end of the year that indicates the state of the art and identify areas needing solutions.
Matt will inquire within Internet2: Is the HOPI working group meeting Internet2 needs for dynamic services offerings?
