NTAC Meeting. Aug 7

IPv6 WG: Michael Lambert.

There is a WG call scheduled for the 15th of August at 3:00PM EDT. More information forthcoming.

Peering and Routing: Darrell Newcomb.

Upgrades are occurring, mainly at backbone sites to the TR-CPS routers. NY, LA and Seattle with Dallas pending. Assessments for capacity needs in the fall are starting to come in. The WG will talk about this topic more at future meetings.

SDN WG: Dan.

The WG had a meeting at GEC 17 in Madison.

  • Primarily a campus based session.
  • They introduced the WG and its charter.
  • Talked about how to connect campus network operators with network researchers.
  • It is clear there is a gap between these two groups that needs to be crossed.

Overall it proved very helpful to meet at GEC. John Moore asked fi they would be at the next GEC? Dan said they have every intention to continue doing so, though the quarterly meetings might be a bit often.

To Quote Dan: "Never a dull moment in the SDN WG!"

David C. asked if any real connections between operators and researchers had been made at the meeting. The answer was it certainly did seem so.

Dan asked if a Focused Technical Workshop on SDN would be a good idea? The answer was it would seem so though there would need to be some work around building an agenda for that.

Vice Chair Elections:
Michael Lambert gave an overview of his proposal for future elections. This is necessitated by the fact that there is no fall meeting planned at this time. He indicated he would provide a document with the proposal by the next call. James Deaton opined that we could just leave the current chairs in place another year.

Internet2 Update: Chris Spears.
Chris indicated the plan was to cut over 1 link last week. A bad CFP was discovered in Salt Lake. This resulted in a flap which caused everything to move back to the 10G. Once the CFP was fixed the path was moved to the 100G as of last thursday. Been running fine since. There are several more paths slated to move by Thursday (8th) morning. The change is very simple, just need to switch the IS-IS metrics.

Darrell asked if a document had been prepared that described the failover procedure and described the information that is collected?

  • Grover indicated that I2 would take an action to get this prepared and send it out to the list.
He also pointed out that the ATLAS view has the new link and asked if the proposed links would show up on the ATLAS mats prior to the traffic being moved to the 100G. Hans indicated that he is working on this and will notify the NTAC when it is ready. Hans also said the maps are in fact ready they just need to be made publicly viewable.

Face to Face meetings: Grover Browning.

The intent seemed to be for there to be smaller more focused meetings for the community to come together. He has suggested a forum for Face to Face meetings of the NTAC. Possible topics would include:

  • Headroom policy.
  • Availability and metrics
  • Continuous Network evolution.
  • Routing Policies.
  • Reporting and Notification.
The date for the first one is Sept 24th - 25th noon to noon at a hotel at the Dallas Airport. Dallas seemed like a central easy to get to location.

If you are interested please send Grover a note. He is able to support about 30 people at the meeting.

John Moore agreed this sounded like a fine idea. He also said it would be good to fill out the agenda items with a bit more detail. David C. agreed it was good and that more detail on the proposed topics to allow people to prepare a bit would be good.

Grover also agreed to resend the original invitation.
