  • Recent content development updates, partnership efforts, strategy for engaging the K20 audience
  • Shortfall of qualified STEM workers projected in the US.  NASA is working hard to provide resources for educators in the science, math, and technology disciplines.
  • Overview of Goddard Space Flight Center - focuses on earth observation, solar system, and sun-earth connections, which is part of the Science -> Earth Science directorates.
  • David also provided an illustration of the types of real scientific data, and the accompanying data visualizations, available to educators.
  • A big challenge is to figure out how to make the data available and accessible to educators in various environments (both formal and informal).  Contextualize the data into many forms to maximize the audiences which can use it.  A few examples of the types of formats being created.
    •  visualizations
    • animations
    • Interviews with scientists - perhaps the biggest asset NASA has to offer educators
    • Produced videos - shortform, minidocumentaries incorporating animations, visualizations, interviews, etc.  The purpose is to explain specific concepts
    • Live/Interactive Distance Learning - videoconference events
  • Link to many of the multimedia objects.  http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hurricanes/multimedia/
  • Video player url?  --
  • Many of these formats can benefit from access to advanced networking, Minimal artifacting, no delay, clean crisp visuals, high fidelity audio.

Awards Discussion (Louis Fox) [VIDEO ]

  • Discuss the creation of an achievement award in honor of Richard Rose
  • Many will remember Richard Rose who was a wonderful presence at the meetings and was very successful at bringing together disparate and traditionally divergent groups in Maryland.
  • Richard passed away about a year ago.  Louis proposed a Richard Rose award that would recognize and acknowledge the work individuals are doing within the K-20 Community.  Marks the ability to work across mulitiple organizations.  It could also recognize a project.
  • We would have to invent the entire award - criteria, selection process, and the award itself.

ACTION ITEMS:
Louis will schedule a call for the group to hammer out options to present to the group at the Spring meeting - Jennifer, Sherilyn Evans, Bob Wollfe.

K20 Leadership Structure (Louis Fox) [VIDEO ]

  • Louis summarized the proceedings in Kansas City.  Executive summary of the meeting is available here.
  • Structure the Advisory Committee meetings -  ½ day should be presentations from partners and content providers ½ day closed business meeting.
  • Corporate Partnerships - how do we include them in the meeting?
    • By inviting vendors to the meeting we may restrict conversation between Advisory Committee members.
    • Perhaps one option is to invite vendors as per desired
    • Make 1st half of meeting open to all attendees to the meeting (including vendors).
    • If come into community they must adhere to a set of guidelines

ACTION ITEM:
The Exec community will put together a survey to poll the group on their pleasure regarding vendors for the spring meeting.

Internet2 K20 Common Project  (Jennifer Oxenford) [VIDEO ]
3:00 - 3:30 pm (30 min)

  • Following up on the discussions in Kansas City, should the K20 Initiative unite around a common application/project that demonstrates the potential of advanced networking in K-20.
  • Brainstorm around candidate projects.
    • Identify what institutions are connected to an advanced network, learn something about each institutions connectivity profile, and people involved at the institution and their interests
    • For example, NASA would like to learn about all the science centers connected to an advanced network worldwide.
    • Live interactives, IPY
    • Choose a project based upon a hot topic (climate for example), then array a variety of applications and content.  Creat something that can be ongoing.
    • For K12 needs to be closely linked to standards.
    • Talk about community but also should highlight the contributions of not just Abilene but the state and regional networks.   Once people see the contributions of each network entity they will begin to better understand and value each one.

ACTION ITEMS:  Group project team - Jennifer Oxenford, David Stroud, Peg Steffen, Tim Boundy.  The group will continue to discuss candidate projects and report back to the group at the Spring 08 MM.
