AGENDA:

Stimulus activity update (Louis)
  • The Internet2 K20 Initiative Executive team recently responded to a request from the FCC to submit a high level statement of principles on how to improve broadband access to "anchor institutions" around the country.
  • This input will help shape the next round of broadband stimulus funding programs.
  • Senior education staffers at the FCC have expressed interest in having the K20 Initiative do a presentation to staffers and a few interested commissioners on how advanced networking capacity is being used in K-20.
  • ACTION ITEM:  Review the Broadband for Educationdocument submitted to the FCC
National Parks engagement (Randy/Kim)
  • Internet2 membership staff and K20 Initiative leadership are engaged in discussions with the National Parks Service (national and local level) on an appropriate membership engagement.
  • FS primary effort is focused on getting access to the network for their research efforts.
  • NPS is very interested in using the network to extend their  education outreach efforts
  • Recently conducted a video conference session which included a panel of educational outreach staff from various NPS sites introducing what their sites can offer K-12 classrooms.  Teachers provided feedback.  A video archive will be posted when available.
  • Heather Weisse will be meeting with a national coordinator of NP VC on Tuesday 12/15/2009. Randy, Kim O met with Heather to discuss things they would like to see as outcomes from Heather's meeting. Developing better dialog between now and the meeting in the Spring. Anticipate being able to invite someone central from the DC office to attend.
  • ACTION ITEM:  Kim and Randy will continue to provide updates on progress.  Let them know if you would like to get involved.
Nysernet's Internet2 event (Larry)
  • Larry Gallery and his team are planning a large event designed to highlight the uses of Internet2 networking capacity in K-20.
  • A complete set of brief video "commercials" will be produced. Larry is hoping to have these ready in time to allow us to perhaps leverage  a few of them for the upcoming FCC demonstration presentation.
  • ACTION ITEM:  Larry will send around an event timeline and additional information.
Remote Instrument Working group (James)
  • The goal of the group is to identify and convene a set of remote instruments "owners" for discussions around how to increase useage in a scalable and sustainable manner.
  • A lot of the instruments may not be available to anyone but the investigators and their partners.  Some may only be available locally or regionally.  Could be an opportunity to find a few instruments that are undersubsribed.
  • Message to the owners/providers should be "we don't want to advertise this.  We are curious about how you extend the use of these instruments."  Many of the instruments are set up as a paid resource.  Too much demand could swamp the providers.
  • Eventually we want to develop a use scenarios and ultimately pilot a few projects and establish a couple success stories to help illustrate what is possible in this space.
  • We can also learn from Lehigh university and past efforts to engage with K-12.
  • Maybe Internet2 staff could help us identify providers?  Would have to go scientific community by scientific community.  Ocean observatories, neuro science community, etc.
  • ACTION ITEM:  James to convene group who will then 1) set goals, 2) define what we mean by remote instruments, 3) develop list of target instruments or method for determining, 4)discuss outreach plan, 5) assign outreach activities, 6) set next meeting time (after holidays).  Kim O and Ann Z volunteered to take part.
  • Volunteers - Kim O, Ann Z, Marla Davenport, Julia Highway, Larry Gallery, Gerri Maglia, Myron Lowe.  Let James know if you'd also like to participate.
Spring 2010 K20 Meeting Agenda topics review (Carol)
  • Carol reviewed the current list of session ideas for the upcoming K20 Initiative meeting on Monday April 26, 2010 in Arlington
  • the group expressed an interest in convene a group of volunteers to put together a working session in the afternoon on ways to improve collaboration relationships within the K20 Initiative. Volunteers included - Gerri, Louis, Larry Gallery, and Jeremiah Frink (from NyserNet) Jeremiah_Frink@boces.monroe.edu.   Carol will convene the team.
  • ACTION ITEMS:  Please sent additional ideas or feedback to Carol.
SEGP updates (All)
  • TX - currently involved in organizing 2-3 video conference events to help educate teachers about how they might use imaging software to visualize data sets stored at the supercomputer centers.  Can we consider this an example of a remote instrument?
