    • See the Monday October 5th afternoon K20 Advisory Committee closed business meeting working agenda here:
    • ACTION ITEM:  Between now and the meeting please prepare a summary of broadband stimulus activities in your SEGP state.  Representatives from each SEGP state will have about 5 minutes to summarize your grant efforts.
  • Broadband stimulus activities update
    • CO, PA, MN, and WA submitted.  WA focused on health and libraries.  Focused on middle mile.   Goal to get 500 Mbps to every rural and remote library in the state.
    • CO - Denise helped write.  WA - Louis helped write for PacNW Gigapop.
    • CA is developing a Community College gran proposal.
    • CO will resubmit in round two.  PA will submit round two.  A few states are intentionally waiting for round two.
    • The Fed gov don't have enough readers to review the grants submitted since most of the expertise around the country is exempt from the review process.
    • 2,200 applications submitted asking for 28 billion about of 4 billion available in 1st round.
  • Development of a remote instrument inventory
    • A lot of the instruments may not be available to anyone but the investigators and their partners.  Some may only be avaibale locally or regionally.  Could be an opportunity to find a few insturments that are undersubsribed.
    • We don't want to advertise this.  We are curious about how you extend the use of these instruments.
    • Develop a couple scenerios with a couple success stories to help illustrate what is possible in this space
    • Lehigh university and edutopia are existing examples.
    • Ask NIGHTLY to take lead on something like this.  Maybe Internet2 could help us identify?  Would have to go scientific community by scientific community.  ocean observatories, neuro science community,
    • Anyone interested in getting involved as a PR opportunity?
    • Many of the instruments are set up as a paid resource.  Too much demand could swamp the providers.
    • Create a model arrangement where content provider is assured there is a process in place.
    • ACTION ITEM:  Kim Owen, Marla Davenport, Julia Highway (at CILC), Larry Gallery, Gerry..
  • Connectivity survey status
    • 70% of data collected from the 38 existing SEGPs
    • The count is up to about 62,000 K-20 institutions connected to Internet2 via the SEGP program. our preliminary count of CA SEGP institutions puts the total number over 70,000. by the time we finish collecting the remaining data we could top 80,000 K-20 organizations connected.
    • K-12 schools account for the bulk of the connected organizations totalling about 48,000.  the median bitrate of K-12 school districts is 4.5 Mbps.
There are about 3500 libraries connected with an median bitrate of 3 MBPS
In order to get as complete/accurate a picture as possible we'll need to finish collecting 2009 data from AL, AK, IA, IL (dead)  RI, MA (dead),  NJ, NM (dead), OR, VA, UT - we're missing bits and pieces from TX (need additional higher ed, library data) GA, NC (no bitrate data),   PA (no k-12 bitrate data),   FL (incomplete K-12 bitrate), MD (need library+k12 data from SAILOR)
    • AL, AK, VA, NJ we're working on. but no luck connecting with anyone from with IA, IL, MA, NM, or UT
    • We're continuing to simplify and improve the layout of the survey results pages and double/triple checking the numbers so we're sure everything is totaling correctly.  If anyone has suggestions on who to work with or how to make progress in the remaining SEGPs please let me know.
    • Louis - this data is being used to help infom the broadband stimulus activities
    • Even though its not comprehensive or complete it is still some of the better data on social institutions and their broadband connectivity.  There are many uses in our given circles.
    • Marla - may help us in NM.  Carol has contact in UT - involved in Statenets.  UT just signed a - CO - Denise may have info on UT as well.  will send a press release.  James to follow up with Denise on CO data.
  • Other business
    • Marla wishes everyone well.  She won't be able to make the meeting.
    • Changes to mega jr.  are coming soon.  Look for input on Mega Jr. via a survey soon.  There will also be an update at the Fall Internet2 Member Meeting.
