How did your architecture practice get started?
The architecture effort at UTA is currently federated and not aligned. The recent hire of an Enterprise Architecture Manager may cause some alignment. The Business Architect was hired by the Office of the CIO in the fall of 2022 and has been focused on developing a practice by engaging with business supporting strategy efforts. The Business Architect and Solution Architect have been collaborating on designing an Enterprise Architecture practice.
What is the focus of your practice – e.g., enterprise, business, technical, solution, data architecture?
Currently the focus of the practice has been driven by project needs to engage the federated architects. The Business Architect has been developing a practice to engage with business units developing strategy, create capability based roadmaps, and engage with architects and business analysts before any project ideation is developed.
As a base business architecture, UTA is using the CAUDIT Higher Education Business Reference Model which has been fed into Archimate and Sharepoint for modeling purposes.
How big is your practice and where is it located in the organization?
There are currently 7 federated architects located in the central IT organization which is called the Office of Information Technology.

Getting better alignment of strategic work flowing to delivery teams. Translating strategy into portfolio decisions.
How does your team manage its work internally and on projects?
Validating the business architecture model with the business to create collaboration and portfolio initiatives.
What are your major challenges?
Gaining internal and external buy-in of the business architecture practice and alignment with the federated architects.
What projects have been your major focus lately?
Decomposing the HR and Advising strategy into Capability Playbooks. Creating Strategies on a Page. Developing initiatives for Project Management Office for portfolio consumption.
