**Face2Face**
The guest speaker for the Face2Face meeting has been confirmed. He is David Labianca, Director of Architecture at Merrill Lynch & Co. Jim will contact him during the next week to provide more details about the meeting.

The finalized agenda is on the wiki, under Face2Face. [AI] Jim will send a note to the Common Solutions Group (CSG) list with the agenda -- for information only. CSG is the meeting that we are piggy-backing on for the ITANA Face2Face. Paul Hill will provide his background material by Monday afternoon (May 7) and it will be posted on the wiki.

There are 20 people registered so far (the list is on the wiki). There are also 82 on the ITANA email list. This is substantial growth in the ITANA space over the first formative month.

There was a general discussion on the next steps for ITANA - what will be the take-aways from the Face2Face and what are the expectations? Generally, there is an expectation to have a session at the Educause meeting in October and the fall Internet2 Member Meeting. Having a presence at regional Educause meetings was also discussed, but the feeling was to wait on those until the topic area is better defined.

In addition, [AI] Jim will post some seed thoughts on "next steps for ITANA" on the wiki and there this will be a topic of discussion at the end of the day at the Face2Face.

A general discussion about Enterprise Architecture included a discussion about an upcoming conference at St. Louis University. The university is holding six slots for its own staff, but the meeting is also open to other members of ITANA. [AI] Jim will ask Jim Hooper for an outline of the Enterprise Architecture consultant sessions planned at St. Louis University.

The discussion turned to a book: "Enterprise Architecture as Strategy," by Jeanne Ross, Peter Weill and David Robertson. The authors talked to several companies about the value they receive from their IT units. The book approaches IT from a very high level, discussing business processes and how those drive IT priorities. It would be useful to have a parallel study of academic institutions. This could start with a web survey that would query IT people as well as those involved with university operational units (registrar, HR, etc.,) to determine how they view the value of IT.
Some IT organizations are having some success with Enterprise Architecture and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). At U. Wisconsin-Madison, there is some movement related to the central ERP system. At UC-Berkeley, there is some progress in making central systems available to other members of the UC system.

There was also a discussion about the "items on the shelf" on the agenda, including the Mellon ESB and the Educause items. These will be on the conference call agenda after the Face2Face. When the Mellon topic is discussed, Jim will invite the Mellon people and Chas DiFatta (CMU) to participate.
