Announcements - Itana News, Working Group Report out

The Business Architecture Working Group reported they will have a meeting on May 11th.

EAMM Working Group Report-Out

Piet Niederhausen and Louis King demonstrated the Enterprise Architecture Maturity Model (EAMM).  

They will also illustrate the success of applying the model.

How do we use the model?

There are 2 entry points:

  1. Doing nothing meaning not having any scope of EA effort

  2. Evaluation of EAMM attributes by having an EA scope in place

The scope should be free to determine what value can be brought to the university.

Features of the EAMM:

  • Open-ended on the high and low sides

  • Attributes can have different maturity levels  

  • Attributes are independent.

Beth Schaefer mentioned she was at -1 before and needed someplace to start.  Using this model will work. This can be evidence or rationale for an EA practice.  Set targets at the end of the year. The EAMM can be used as the basis of developing metrics to demonstrate the value of EA.

Louis King mentioned that the group lost all practitioners except himself which required a reset, reframe and reshape.  The group kept the tool alive with some of the original aspirations

Bob Dein from Miami University of Ohio said they will use the EAMM in upcoming goal setting conversations.

Rory O’Neill from the University of Alaska systems mentioned a lack of leadership support and the EAMM can be used as a starting point of the conversation to develop an EA practice.

Jim Phelps mentioned that Architecture happens one way or another through accretion or attempting to apply some discipline to implementation.

Ayodele from George Washington said they had a new CIO and they can use the tool to develop a new strategy

A goal is to link practices on ITANA site to the EAMM.

Jim Phelps mentioned there is an area on the ITANA site where folks can write in the EA level of maturity at their institution. At this point, only the University of Washington has filled out the profile but this could be a good exercise to start with to understand where you are with the EA practice.

J.J. DuChateau asked about metrics associated with EAMM and the opportunity to measure progress.   

The EAMM provides guides on how to improve the EA practice through the following:

  • Plan and Execute-Interventions

  • Using the tools to analyze practice and identify opportunities, plan, and execute

  • Showing outcomes helps with not getting bogged down in metrics

  • Dimensions of scope

  • Showing perspectives with links

Piet Niederhausen talked about how the EAMM can help with scope definition and if you are around level 3 then you have something going.  He also talked about the strategy on a page-template

Jim Phelps mentioned the EAMM can be used as a planning tool with a time dimension.  The EAMM defines what, where, and how.

Rupert Burke asked how does capacity associated with goals fit into the EAMM?

Louis said capacity is associated with the capability.

The EAMM provides goals to evaluate an EA practice.  For example, a team has these capabilities…what can we do with this team….goals.

How do we align our capabilities with goals with what we have?

The EAMM provides a starter set of goals.

The University of Washington is interested in growing capacity in EA skills and would like to embed these skills in workforce development.

Piet said there is need to be a definition of organizational coverage of EA skills.

Betsy Draper is linking the EAMM with current issues at her institution.

So I think the maturity model will help a great deal in helping us tell the story of what we are doing well or not so well and help to ensure that as we move forward we can demonstrate improvement in our service to the University.
