Commercial Offerings and InCommon Trusted Access Platform

There were discussions at EDUCAUSE and RUCC recently about some campuses moving to commercial cloud IdM solutions and a related lack of understanding about TIER, now the InCommon Trusted Access Platform. Overall, there is a need for clarification about the status of our software and how it fits with campus needs and the problems it can help solve. There is also a need for communicating about Federation and how it helps connect research and higher education around the world.

Part of the issue is simplifying the messages and also reaching CIOs when they are thinking about identity and access. Kevin is working on a 20-30 minute presentation using much of the material presented during BaseCAMP. He will vet that presentation with the PAG when ready.

Collaboration Success Program (CSP)

The second CSP kicks off this week with a face-to-face meeting involving individuals from the seven participating schools, plus staff and subject-matter experts. Participants select from among four common identity and access management problems to tackle. This year’s program will be much shorter than the first CSP, which ran for a year. The training sessions will be offered early in the process and be more formalized. The goal is to have five more CSP cohorts over the next five years and to schedule them with an eye toward the academic calendar and budget cycles. This year’s participants are:

  • Fordham University
  • University of North Carolina-Charlotte
  • University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
  • York University
  • Southern Methodist University
  • University of Louisiana Lafayette
  • University of Colorado at Boulder

InCommon Steering and the Trust/Identity /PAG

Kevin has had several informal conversations the extensive overlap between PAG and Steering membership and whether these should be one group. In terms of effectiveness, efficiency, and use of volunteer time it makes sense to combine the two. Discussions will continue.
