We have Etienne Pelaprat from Unizin reporting progress on:
- An emerging layer of data services (mainly data marts) to drive reporting and other end-user experiences, and
- Explorations of using UDP-sourced data to train ML models (mainly around course grade and enrollment prediction using tools like AutoML.
Matthew Buss from Internet2 and I will also have some brief news Wednesday on logistics for our SIG, including an easier listserv membership and meeting invite process and a new home for our archive.

Brown University is collaborating with Unicon on efforts to provide the infrastructure, visualizations, process and expertise to faculty and administrators so that they can use data from multiple digital course tools and university systems to gain insight about how their decisions impact learner engagement. Roland Hall and Katerina Stepanova at Brown shared their work on the data infrastructure with this group. We are now ready to continue the discussion LInda Feng from Unicon initiated in the fall on data retention policies. We have dug in deeper to our needs and the proposed lifecycle, and we would like your thoughts on these and other outstanding questions!
1. Is there a value to data remaining in Canvas (or other platforms) beyond the operational period?
2. What would it take to remove data from production Canvas?
3. Can learning platforms retain anonymized data?
4. What do we need from Instructure? Other vendors?
April, 4/28
Etienne from Unizin and Ned from Google will share their joint motivation and vision for why Google Cloud Platform and Unizin’s UDP make a lot of sense together.
Shaun Moon and some of his colleagues from Instructure will join us to chat about the current and near-future state of Canvas Data and Live Events.
May, 5/26
Jeff is going to make a last minute pivot of topics, akin to the pivots we all had to make in the pandemic response. Jeff will share the story of the UBC Learning Analytics team as they defined a process for investigating incidents of suspected academic misconduct with all courses online. Hopefully this will be an engaging discussion about data governance, academic integrity, and the practical realities of what data can tell us about student activity online.

Linda Feng and colleagues from Unicon will do a deep dive on Canvas Data 2, describe its differences from Canvas Data 1, and offer lessons learned and considerations for migrating.
