Conference Presentations
- SteveO will submit a K12 Federation session for the Fall 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting
- For the EDUCAUSE 2012 Conference in Denver, the session submission deadline was in February, and no K12 Federations session was submitted. There may be a chance to get together on an informal basis at EDUCAUSE.
Development of K-12 Federated Identity Management Roadmap

- Mark made excellent updates to the roadmap since our last call.
- Terminology section: Mark took terminology from end of assessment document
- Removed and added a few of the terms
- Mark welcomes others' suggestions
Use Cases and Case Studies
- It would be helpful to add some use cases and case studies to the roadmap
- InCommon has case studies, but none seem to apply to K12 directly
- Mark and Steve Thorpe may do a case study for NC Trust
- Denise: a school district centric (not federation centric) case study could be helpful
- starting with the school district view should help those getting started
- Even a use case focusing on how a district handles authenticating and passwords for kids and others can help illustrate the work that needs to be done
- Then we can explain that there is another world (of federation) beyond the district level can be rich and rewarding
- Benefits/Value Proposition section of roadmap ennumerates the advantages of running and IdP with and without a federation
- much data goes back and forth goes to the State Dept of Ed and to the Feds; need to explain the links back and forth
- Mark has discussed federation with his contact at Durham Public Schools, and may invite him to join this group.
Mark may also reach out to a contact at Rockingham County schools
- they were one of the pilot K12s that was part of NC trust
- they are using Canvas and using federated IdM
- an IdP is being run at MCNC for them as part of the pilot
- they are using Google Apps for Education
- may be looking at single sign on
Mark talked to his contact at Rockingham County Schools about writing up a case study from K12 perspective
- how it's impacted their district and the students

Q: At what grade level do credentials get assigned to students?
A: In some districts, 3rd grade by default, and 1st and 2nd grade if principals opt in
Q: What about parents being assigned credentials?
A: In some cases, parents can sign in and see the test scores for kids. However, it's true that parent ID proofing for credentials is time consuming,
Jim noted that Fairfax County will pilot Microsoft IT Academy through SAML.
- David said that they've been thinking about statewide federation in Alaska
- In creating an MOU, they're looking at parts they can lift (and modify) from the InCommon Participation agreement
- framework of what people's responsibilities are
- mechanics of hosting a federation
- repository for metadata and interfaces
- these issues need to be part of the roadmap

Also good to reach out to State Education Tech Directors Assoc (SETDA) to see if there are use cases, specifically on school districts moving forward federation.

Moving Forward with the Roadmap
SteveO: All of you are welcome and encouraged to contribute to the roadmap.
Would be good to finish a first draft of the roadmap by the fall, could aim for Internet2 FMM on Oct 1.
