  1. Presentation: Guy Jones, Executive Director of the Maryland Research and Education Network (MDREN) - update on the MDREN pilot.
see the wiki for the MDREN pilot
see slides from the Sept. 11 presentation
    1. Started pilot in 2013 with the intent of quick win in bringing in services and partnering with Fischer International providing technical integration capabilities Kyocera was the first service but were not part of InCommon. Did not make use of Fischer product or InCommon to connect people
      1. 10 Institutions participated 9 used shibboleth one was separate because they couldn’t use Shibboleth
      2. Set up across the state of MD with a wired range of IdPs
      3. Original Intent / contract was to use Fischer International to provide the technical connections but Kyocera was not set up to use InCommon. They set up bi-lateral metadata exchanges between the schools and was used throughout the project.
        1. This was considered a learning experience that was successful but would not be continued. Kyocera is providing infrastructure needed to tie in MOOCs.
        2. Members are in specific categories, and heavily weighted in Higher-Ed.
        3. Schools that were participating were a wider range. A number of the schools who are moving over to InCommon. MDREN is working with them to go through the technical connectivity part of the project which has raised awareness
    2. Challenges to the pilot:
      1. Every school had a different support structure and level of expertise so they had to work with individual school
      2. The Fischer contract was ready to go and initiate but it was never utilized.
    3. Successes
      1. Heightened awareness of the federated Id Management  and trust arena
      2. Increase of memberships participation in InCommon
      3. Working with other organizations such as libraries
      4. Follow up happened last fall with the Maryland Department of Education
        1. Unfortunately the department has had complete turnover in staff so they are briefing the new group
    4. Currently there are issues with InCommon having to do everything and new services are getting turned up. There needs to be another method of providing InCommon
      1. From a board level there is uncertainty about the responsibility MDREN would take.
      2.  They are looking for the “killer app” but this has not be found and would be beneficial if it worked with InCommon
      3. Active updates with NJVID but until they connect, they are connecting through the Jersey Trust (which is working well)
      4. Hoping to drive further interest in K-12 though race to the top.
    5. In conclusion, the pilot was considered successful as far as being able to support the Kyocera Product and a learning opportunity but they will not be moving forward with the pilot.
      1. They are still looking for the right path forward
      2. It is important vendors be shibboleth
      3. State agencies will also need to be brought to the same page
    6. Q&A
      1.  Q;  Was there K-12 involvement
        1. A:  They were not involved with Kyocera – it was a project called Common Ground and involved Shibboleth and Trust for race for the top

      2. Steward Participation Class
        1. Looking at this as the model
        2. If stewardship aspect goes away, what happens to the regional at that point – What if they aren’t stewards
        3. K-12 want to federate and participate
          1. Should Higher-ed be extended to K-20 or should there be a separate K-12
  4. There will be a BoF at the Internet2 Tech Exchange
    1. Pilots are welcome to attend
    2. Janet Yarbrough will attend with Bob Lamvik
