Getting Ready for eduGAIN
As you may know, InCommon has joined eduGAIN and has begun making the policy and technical changes needed to participate in international interfederation. Those who manage identity providers and service providers in the InCommon Federation have choices to make as we approach February 15, 2016, which is when InCommon will begin importing and exporting metadata from and to eduGAIN at scale.
Please don’t wait until February to start thinking about how this major change affects you. Prior to February 15, there are a number of things to consider for each SAML deployment that consumes InCommon metadata:
Once we start importing eduGAIN metadata, the size of the InCommon production aggregate will more than double. Is your deployment ready to consume such a large aggregate? To find out how to prepare for eduGAIN metadata, read the Getting Ready for eduGAIN wiki page.
IdP metadata will be exported by default while SP metadata will be exported on demand. What are the implications of each choice? Are there guidelines as you consider whether to export your metadata? What does it mean if you decide not to export? Find out by reviewing the Getting Ready for eduGAIN wiki page.
If you are currently running Shibboleth IdP V2, now is a good time to begin upgrading to Shibboleth IdP V3. Although V3 is not strictly required for eduGAIN, V2 is quickly approaching end-of-life and InCommon recommends upgrading to V3 as soon as possible. For those who prefer structured help in upgrading to V3, or installing from scratch, InCommon has scheduled three Shibboleth workshops for the first half of 2016.
