PESC Meeting

Notes concerning the CommIT project, from the recent PESC meeting (October 18-19, 2012), are in a Google Doc:https://docs.google.com/a/internet2.edu/document/d/1noBAuJTRdpYeGgpEyoIPiC9e6cuieTkL9mw-yoFKxxE/edit?pli=1#heading=h.9eb35m6n5l73

These will serve as the start of a proposal for funding for the first stage of CommIT. The request will go to Shel Waggener, senior vice president at Internet2.

Ann reviewed the highlights (see the Google Doc for details):

  • Scope – US admissions process
  • Service description (phase 1) includes governance, marketing strategy, and use cases
  • Limits to Scope – a number of items are out of scope for the first phase
  • Emphasis that this is not a data clearinghouse, but offering authentication, an opaque ID, and assurance, but this isn’t a service portal
  • Production Success – these are a number of ideas for metrics that might be useful
  • Funding and Management Strategy – one funding model would be similar to Kuali, where you pay to join, but pay at a higher level to participate in the decision-making about the service

Next Steps

The Internet2 board meeting November 1; we hope to know more about the funding potential at that time.

The next call will be cancelled (conflict with EDUCAUSE Annual Conference).
