Roadmap Discussion

See attached doc CommITRoadMapDRAFT-May2.doc.

At the PESC meeting last week, several Internet2, Higher Ed, and Vendor reps met and discussed next steps for the CommIT project (a summary of which is included in the .doc attachment above). For more information about the vision of CommIT, see the vision link on the homepage of this wiki.

Ann provided an overview of the doc and then asked whether there would be interest from the HE participants to develop an SP for the prototype. There was interest from NCSU and possibly interest from Penn State and Madison. See details below.

The first stage of production outlined in the document is currently scoped to LoA1 and federated authentication. No integrated services beyond that would be provided. For some HE participants, this would be enough to consider participating. For others (like Indiana), it was only mildy interesting.

  • NCSU
    • Interested in participating in the prototype,
    •  AI - Harry and Ann will talk with Louis to determine next steps.
    • LoA1 may be enough to drive this at NCSU
  • UW Madison
    • AI - Karen will talk with Keith Hazelton about their plans for admissions
    • LoA2 not a driver at this time
  • Indiana
    • Mild interest for LoA 1
    • Combination of CommApp and LoA2 is a stronger proposal
    • AI - Ann will talk with Mark and crew about their minimum needed functionality.
  • Penn State
    • Possible interest in the prototype
    • Have a mobile schedule of courses that might be good to prototype
    • AI - Jim will talk to Vince about need for LoA2 and participation in the prototype
  • Georgetown
    • Participating in the prototype
  • CMU
    • AI - Tim McGraw talking to Michael Gettes at CMU w/r/t prototype participation

Business Plan

Tim McGraw from CommApp suggested that we provide the option to require students to log in each time they access a new site (single userid/password) vs. leveraging federated auth (SSO) . That's up to the Service Provider to decide, so yes, this can be done. This functionality will help provide one of the "baby steps" needed to ease organizations into the idea of federated auth.

Alternative Apps

Dave Moldoff brainstormed a bit about how this could enable some interesting mobile apps. For instance, a recruiter could collect the personal information from a prospect, identity proof him or her, and generate a QR code or card that the student could use to log in to get more information, apply, etc. The recruiter could add information about this event to the CommIT db and increase the individual's credential to LoA2.
